Wild Stories

  "Opossums are good actors"

I passed this (seemingly dead) adult Opossum in the middle of a busy road. It was sittng there with cars buzzing by on both sides of it. People were fortunately being kind hearted. They each made a point to NOT hit it. So, I pulled over, got out my thick gloves and a small pet carrior (which I keep in my car at all times) and went back for it. I approached from its blind side,( I didn't want to scare it into running into traffic). When there was a break in cars, I ran out, grabbed it by the tail, slid my hand under its belly and carefully picked it up! It became quite wiggly but was not aggresive, because it was in shock.

HE was brought to and held at Back to Nature for a couple days, to make sure there wasn't any unseen injuries, (Note: the skin abrasion on its lower jaw). Luckily, his injuries were minor. I was able to release him on my private property, which is surrounded by woods.

*This picture was taken back at my house, where it played dead and doing a good job of it, I must say! I took the opportunity to, quietly and calmly, snap a picture.

  A Red Rat Snake

On 7/14/11 We saved this very thin Red Rat Snake from certain death as it was laying right in the middle of a street. It looked like a stick from a distance. It has been fed one mouse (see picture). We can thank these snakes for keeping Orlando's mouse and rat population under control. It is about three feet long and not very friendly, although it did pose for this picture.
